Rampant Killings in Plateau State: A Blight on Governance and a Call for Urgent Action
By Olayode Ogunbunmi
Jos, Plateau State – The North Central Youth Council (NCYC) has issued a powerful statement condemning the persistent and brutal killings of innocent civilians in Plateau State, describing it as a gross failure of governance and a national tragedy that demands urgent intervention.
In a heartfelt communiqué signed by its National President, Activist S.A. Asuku, the group decried the spate of violence that has plagued communities across Plateau, leading to loss of lives and displacement of families. The Council lamented the inability of the government, both at the state and federal levels, to curb the bloodshed, stating that the continued silence and inaction now border on betrayal of public trust.
"The recent gruesome killings on the Plateau are unacceptable and must not be treated with levity by any serious government. It is heartbreaking that those charged with protecting lives and property appear overwhelmed and, worse still, indifferent," the statement reads.
The NCYC expressed particular concern over the perceived inaction of the Plateau State Government, calling on Governor Caleb Muftwang to either take decisive action or step aside for a more capable leadership to take the reins. According to the Council, governance is not about attending political meetings or symbolic visits to affected communities but about ensuring the safety and security of citizens.
Citing the recent attack on hunters returning home for the Eid-el-Kabir celebration, the group warned that the government’s continued failure to act decisively may provoke youth unrest and spark uncontrollable reprisals.
“The patience and resilience of the youth on the Plateau must not be mistaken for weakness. If government fails to protect its people, the people may be forced to protect themselves — a situation that could lead to chaos,” the Council warned.
In a direct appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, the NCYC called for a complete overhaul of Operation Safe Haven, the military task force stationed in Plateau State. The group described the current leadership as "too weak" to deal with the scale of violence and recommended that the task force headquarters be relocated from Jos to one of the crisis-prone villages to increase visibility and response.
“We need commanders who deliver results. Leadership of security outfits must be reviewed continuously until we achieve the desired peace,” the statement continued.
The Council also suggested that if the worsening insecurity is politically motivated to undermine the Tinubu administration, the President must rise to the occasion and tackle it head-on.
The youth body called on traditional rulers, village heads, and community youth leaders to strengthen local surveillance and security efforts, urging all Plateau communities to adopt an “Operation Protect Your Territory” approach.
The NCYC concluded its statement with condolences to the affected families, praying for peace and justice to prevail.
“May affliction never arise again,” it concluded.
