In a letter addressed to the State Director of Security, Department of State Services (DSS) at the Kwara State Command Headquarters, Ilorin, concerned citizens of Offa and Ibolo Kingdom have raised serious allegations against Mr. Femi Agbaje Whyte, the Adviser on Political Matters to Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of Kwara State, Newsbulletin reports.
The petition, signed by Ibrahim Jimoh on behalf of the concerned citizens, accuses Mr. Agbaje of infringing upon the fundamental rights of the people of Offa, particularly their rights to freedom of association, expression, and choice of candidate for the upcoming local government elections. The petition specifically highlights incidents of intimidation and threats directed at market women, notably at Owode Market.
“Instead of using this opportunity to positively impact the community, Mr. Agbaje has been infringing on the fundamental rights of the people,” the letter states. “His deadly antecedent is a fearful trait in Offa Community, hence the use of this and his new position to intimidate and threaten every individual who seems not in support of his imposed candidate for Offa Local Government Chairman Position.”
The petition outlines a pattern of harassment and coercion allegedly employed by Mr. Agbaje against those who do not align with his political views or those of his affiliates. This behavior, the petitioners argue, is unacceptable and goes against the principles of democracy and fundamental human rights.
The citizens are calling for an immediate investigation into these allegations by the DSS to ensure Mr. Agbaje is held accountable for his actions. The letter emphasizes the need to maintain peace and security in the community and protect the rights of every citizen.
“We trust that your esteemed office will take the necessary steps to address this matter promptly and ensure justice is served,” the petition concludes.
Copies of the petition have also been sent to the Director General of the Department of State Services at the headquarters in Abuja, the National President of the Offa Descendants Union (ODU), and various media houses.
Mr. Agbaje Whyte has reportedly visited the homes of various political actors, allegedly threatening those who do not align with his political views. This is seen as a violation of the right to lawful freedom of association guaranteed by the Constitution.
As the local government elections approach, this development adds to the growing tensions in Offa, with citizens calling for vigilance and adherence to democratic principles by all political actors.
